Lubbock Sports Medicine has teamed up with ImPACT to provide the lastest in diagnosing and managing concussions.
Over the last several years the understanding of what a concussion is has dramatically improved. From the NFL all the way down to adolescents competing in contact sports, new guidelines are being implemented to protect athletes.
At Lubbock Sports Medicine we take concussions very seriously. As team physicians for several area high schools and colleges we have seen firsthand what a concussion looks like and how it can affect an athlete. Based on our experience and the latest international research we now know the ineherent dangers an athlete faces when a concussion occurs. If an athlete is not fully recovered from a concussion and suffers a subsequent concussion, the damage can become permanent and irreversible.
The ImPACT program involves neurocognitive testing which has been recently called the cornerstone of concussion management. We know that when a concussion occurs it causes a disruption of the athletes neurocognitive functions that involve verbal and visual memory, processing speed, and reaction time. The ImPACT test can be administered before the season to determine a baseline. If the athlete suffers a concussion the test can be administered again and the results can be compared to their baseline to help determine the severity of the injury. The ImPACT is one component of a complete physical and neurological exam. Even in the absence of a baseline test, the ImPACT test can be administered and compared to normative data that is age and gender specific.
Lubbock Sports Medicine has undergone training on the ImPACT program and has received the Credentialed ImPACT Consultant rating from the creators of the program. Currently we are the only Credentialed ImPACT Consultant in this part of the state.
The ImPACT test is a web based tool that can be accessed anywhere there is an internet connection. School districts may purchase the program thru Lubbock Sports Medicine or the test may be purchased individually by parents. For more information please contact our office.
