Dr. Joel Campbell

Dr. Joel Campbell is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon practicing in Lubbock, TX, specializing in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee, and elbow.  He received advanced training in complex shoulder reconstruction, knee preservation, cartilage restoration, ligament reconstruction, and the latest in therapeutic biologics during his fellowship at the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Greenville, SC.  During this time he was fortunate to work with professional athletes while covering the Colorado Rockies during spring training and the Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox affiliate) in addition to covering several college and high school teams.  He has a special interest in shoulder arthroplasty/replacement but enjoys treating all patients with ailments of the shoulder, knee, and elbow.

Dr. Campbell grew up in a small farming community in central Illinois and developed a love for sports and physical fitness at a young age.  When not engaged in football, basketball, baseball or weightlifting during high school he enjoyed working various construction and farming jobs, creating a personal appreciation of physical health’s role in work and recreation.

Football injuries and subsequent surgeries during his college years inspired him to work in the off-season as a student athletic trainer, further establishing his passion for sports medicine and developing a deep understanding of the injured athlete.  Ultimately, it was his grandfather, a lifelong farmer, who inspired him to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery after witnessing the restorative effect of hip replacement surgery, allowing his grandfather to maintain an active lifestyle into his early 90s.

Dr. Campbell attended medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL, the hospital where his grandfather had one of his hip surgeries.  Here he was further exposed to orthopedic sports medicine, performing research under Brian Cole, the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox team physician and cartilage restoration expert.  After graduating in the top 5% of his class and receiving a staff prize for clinical excellence, he moved to Nashville, TN, where he completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Campbell has been on several mission trips in different capacities to Jamaica, Mexico, and Haiti, which have been some of the most rewarding experiences of his life.  He is an avid fitness enthusiast and weightlifter, a Chicago sports fan- especially the Chicago Cubs, and enjoys hiking, country music, podcasts/audiobooks, American history, and Dairy Queen.
